Predictions for Recruitment in 2012 - What is your opinion?

In the latest issue of Recruitment International magazine, a range of recruiters and suppliers to the recruitment industry were asked what their predictions are for 2012.

Interestingly, the general concensus of the article is that 'optimisim is key to sustaining business - because without it we risk talking ourselves into recession...'

So what are Bond International Software's predictions?

Daniel Richardson, Chief Technology Officer at Bond International Software, said that with the UK economy likely to be unstable for the foreseeable future, 2012 will be a difficult year for recruiters and candidates alike.

He said: “In the increasingly volatile recruitment industry, the candidate market is becoming far less loyal to any one individual recruiter and thus recruitment consultants are having to work harder to retain those relationships with individual prospective employees.

At the same time huge numbers of candidates are competing for each position, but for recruiters to remain ahead of the curve, the key is in sourcing and identifying high quality candidates that are right for each role.

Ensuring only the most pertinent of candidates are put forward for roles will allow recruiters to beat off competition from their rivals and retain their position as the recruitment supplier of choice for their clients.

Customer service therefore – to both the candidate and the client – is a key priority for the recruiter. And there is indeed already an increase in demand for recruitment solutions that aid in the filtration process and in easily managing multiple tasks across multiple clients and candidates. In short, this all boils down to delivering consistently high levels of service.

We can therefore expect to see a rise in the number of products and technology based services being released in 2012 which reflect this widespread current shift in emphasis, towards enhancing the levels of service recruiters are able to offer their clients, beyond the usual requirement of placing more candidates in more roles.

Dashboards for instance are now, as predicted previously, overtaking the more traditional databases in the real-time monitoring of activity and progress, allowing for a far greater degree of visibility and advance warning as to situations requiring intervention.

Most notable is the degree to which expectations have risen when it comes to mobile functionality. Indeed, ubiquitous working, where the lines between desktop and mobile devices are disappearing, are increasing in demand.

Software systems that are simply accessed via mobile internet browsers, however, are no longer cutting the mustard, as iPad and iPhone technology and its intuitive use gathers pace. Therefore, there is now a trend for recruiters to access the back office software system to display candidates and vacancies immediately during client meetings, therefore avoiding delay by having to return to a desktop to answer queries. This will cause technology providers to accelerate their development of mobile applications that are compatible with leading hardware releases.

There is also an increasing demand for recruitment systems that integrate with social media networks such as LinkedIn and Facebook, and that are appreciative of the wealth of information available in the wider social sphere beyond these two giants of the online social world.

Such improved visibility and the increased significance of “social” will allow recruiters to pull in information from an increasing number of sources, which will provide them with a clearer picture of their potential candidates from the very earliest stages of the recruitment process, allowing them to recruit intelligently.

Such a display of flexibility, visibility and responsiveness showcases the recruiter in the brightest possible light and enables a vastly improved service, and perception, and this is something we can expect to see come to fruition over the next 12 months..'

Neil Lagden, Head of Bond Payroll Services has been featured by Payroll World in their recent blog post 'Outsourcing Payroll'.

In the post, Neil offers some advice on how to simplify the task of calculating your payroll :

The business of paying people used to be a relatively straightforward process. But over the past 20 years or so, an almost continuing raft of legislative changes and shifting business requirements have made calculating payroll anything but straightforward.

Simultaneously, demand for increased labour market flexibility has seen a growing dependency on job-sharing, part-time and temporary working and a corresponding change in working time patterns. The way that people are rewarded has become more creative with increased emphasis on flexible benefits.

All of this activity places additional pressure on the payroll function and the required technology. In-house payroll teams need to ensure that the service they are buying matches the requirements of the department, business and legislators, but that it is also sufficiently adaptable to react to any future changes as the industry and market develops.

Upgrading payroll systems is a major undertaking and cannot be underestimated. Before committing to what will likely be a complex implementation project therefore, it makes sense to consider the alternatives, which could even involve taking payroll out of house.

The solution?
Set against the increasing tide of increased rules and regulations, outsourcing payroll can seem an extremely attractive proposition. Using a reputable and established provider means clients are guaranteed a reliable and accurate service and have access to advanced levels of payroll expertise ‘on tap’, reducing administration and shifting the burden of compliance.

A fully-blown outsourced arrangement removes the worry and costs associated with keeping up-to-date with new technologies, as outsourcers are able to invest in the latest sophisticated technological infrastructure. They will also be geared up and sufficiently agile to modify their processes to reflect market conditions.

However, there are several different types and levels of outsourcing – indeed, a fully blown solution might be right for one company, but for someone else a hybrid between an in-house system and outsourced solution will be best.

Outsourcers must be chosen primarily on flexibility and a willingness to work through the options to tailor the service delivery to meet the client’s needs....

Recruitment's reliance on digital processes is ever-growing, but what new products and services are out there, and what can they do for your business?

The latest issue of 'The Global Recruiter' magazine (formerly Recruitment Consultant Magazine), featured an interesting article which drew upon the salient aspects of how recruitment has come to rely so heavily on digital processes to streamline business and consultants working processes.

Written by Jim Tanfield @GlobalEditor, the article's opening sets the theme:

'It is almost hard to remember the time when software wasn't used by recruiters, can you honestly imagine going back to the now archaic methods used in the 1970's? Thought not. So we asked some of the providers of these essential software services to explain the effectiveness of their current products and to predict the usefulness of future processes...
The article features overviews from some of recruitments leading software and services suppliers. Social media,workforce management, cloud computing and managing new legislation such as the Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) are some of the topics covered in the feature.

Is cloud computing really the best solution for recruiters?

Jim Tanfield, Editor of Recruitment Consultant Magazine this week wrote a fantastic article on the virtues of cloud computing. With all the hype surrounding cloud computing, is it really the best solution for recruiters?

The article offers opinions from a range of the UK's leading software providers - including Bond International Software.

Jims introduction to the article sets the tone of the whole piece: Cloud computing is surely one of the most common buzz phrases of the last three years within recruitment, it is a very snappy title for something so unfathomably large, so therefore can recruitment really take place within the cloud?

In its most basic meanings it is accessing services via the Internet, which are hosted on either physical or vitalised servers at an off site location.... but this use of the net has created a split within the recruitment industry: some see the reduced costs outweighed by the security risks....'

The article highlights some of the main benefits of cloud computing including: reduction of costs of infrastructure ( cost and time ) and the reduction of outgoings which 'can be greatly reduced by paying for a consistent and frequently upgraded system monthly, rather than one payment upfront..'. Data security, scalability, flexible working for staff ( as only an Internet connect is needed), back-ups, maintenance and upgrades all done for you centrally, and the latest functionality through multi-tenant architecture.

Daniel Richardson, Chief Technology Officer at Bond International Software, points out another invaluable benefit, which is dependability ..'And of course improved business resilience is another driver. If an on-site network fails, the recruiter loses access to the candidate database loosing valuable time to make placements.With tens of thousands of recruitment consultants however, scrambling to place candidates in a highly competitive industry, no recruiter can afford such a loss. The cloud option provides business resilience as standard, as servers are replicated on typically mirrored, virtual sites.'

Richardson is quick to balance this by focusing on the infrastructure essential to take the cloud: 'The speed with which recruiters can access their data in the cloud will depend entirely on their connectivity: it is the amount of bandwidth available that determines how fast data can be retrieved. And before recruiters make the move to the cloud, they should consider the risk of vendor lock-in. Once the recruiter signs on the dotted line, he may well find he is tied to the cloud supplier for a number or years, and that is indeed very complicated, and often costly, to move this data from the hosted solution.'

Richardson concludes his opinion with a note about the security issue with cloud computing: Cloud providers need to make their infrastructures as secure as possible and can't host data anywhere which puts the client in breach of data protection. As the article continues, it is suggested that cloud computing is not for everyone. According to Kamachi's Raymond Pennie : 'for some it will be more expensive than their existing IT costs...however, when it is time to replace their IT, the cloud offers the chance to outsource all the difficult stuff to cloud based providers..'

'Cracking it' : A feature all start-up recruitment agencies should read...

Jim Tanfield, Editor of Recruitment Consultant magazine writes; setting up a business, in any economic climate, is a daunting challenge but many are under misguided belief that recruitment is the easiest business to 'go it alone'.

However, Jims feature shows that with careful strategic planning and selecting the right early support choices, 'you can make the right foundations to a successful future'.

Typically, start-ups purchase software that satisfies these needs, either hosted or on-premise, but what happens when the business expands and becomes successful resulting in an inevitable shift of recruitment processes that are no longer satisfied by thebasic start-up system?...

..As the recruitment company’s business expands, the system they have invested in should also be sufficiently scalable. Many start-ups fall into the trap of opting for a system that is not fully configurable, usually to keep initial costs down, but ironically, this could prove to be more expensive in the long run when the original lacklustre system inevitably has to be replaced by a software package with improved functionality, or one which can accommodate a greater numbers of users 12 months later.”

Recruitment start-ups should therefore decide on a system which can grow with the business, offering extended functionality without the need for reinvestment.

'Executive search consultants are optimistic for the year ahead, according to a new survey by the Association of Executive Search Consultants (AESC).

Following an economically turbulent 2009 and 2010, we can breathe a sigh of relief that a new year has arrived and hopefully we can all look towards a positive 2011.

Megnauth continues, “SmartPhone allows our staff to see which caller is calling before they pick up the phone via its ability to monitor and immediately identify all callers by their telephone number. This allows the consultant to identify which of their colleagues last dealt with the candidate, the type of vacancies they have been searching for and at what stage of the application process they are – permitting any consultant to handle any inbound enquiry equally effectively, thus further improving customer service. In the currently challenging market, where there are numerous candidates fighting for a handful of jobs, and over 10,000 recruitment companies scrambling to place them, this capability is a tangible differentiator for us for our customer service offerings.”

Whilst this has only been deployed in the UK at present, Morgan Hunt has plans to roll out SmartPhone integration with existing Bond Adapt software to its 40 consultants at its Russian sites in Moscow and St. Petersburg in the near future.

My conclusions from the Innovate CV discussion on the future of recruitment technology

This week i had great pleasure in attending a dinner hosted by our industry colleagues - Innovate CV. The theme of the main discussion that evening was the future of recruitment technology:

Following the economic turmoil of last year, we all had our own perceptions of what the future could hold for the recruitment industry. The following is my summary of the general consensus of opinion:

The last 12 months has been one of economic uncertainty for many organisations in the recruitment industry. It has forced recruiters to examine their recruitment processes and question how they can reduce costs but still attract a high calibre of candidate. Technology has played a prominent part in facilitating this, and for those who have acted decisively, they have not only survived these turbulent times, but have in fact flourished and are now in a much stronger position as we move forward into 2011. One opinion is that the recession has served to re-shape the way the recruitment industry operates. So what can we expect for the future?

Streamlining your recruitment processes is something many of us will be anticipating: In a highly competitive marketplace, recruiters need to exceed candidate expectations and differentiate their business by delivering a superior candidate experience. Technology is instrumental in making this possible, and allows companies to offer enhanced recruitment services, which also serve to strengthen communications and promote transparency. These include candidate portals, which allow candidates an element of self service, giving them visibility and input into the recruitment process. By automating the communication system, candidates will benefit, by being kept informed throughout the application process, be alerted to new opportunities and even share these opportunities among their peers. They can also log into your career portal to keep their contact information and skills / CV up to date and confirm or rearrange interviews. By utilising these tools recruiters can continue to improve the candidate's experience and lower administration costs.

The real consensus of opinion fell between the boundaries of ‘People buy off People’ and ‘Phone Technology’ which is still in regarded as one of the most ‘under-used’ technologies available. Whilst technology can significantly streamline and improve recruitment processes, it is NOT a substitute for the experience and knowledge of a professional recruiter: Recruitment skills are essential in order to identify, assess and nurture suitable candidates; the software will provide the support mechanism, but it cannot replace the experience, skill and judgement of a recruiter.

Above all, recruiters must make their technology solutions work hard. They are a fantastic business management information tool that can be used to constantly monitor the success of your campaigns, consultants and placements. By automating all reporting systems through the software to analyse KPI's, training needs, bottlenecks, cost per hire, time to hire etc, managers can make informed decisions that will help to shape the future effectiveness of your recruitment...

Bond International Software web-based recruitment software product no longer limited to Internet Explorer

October 2010: Bond International Software, the global provider of hosted recruitment software and recruitment software as a service (SaaS), today announces that their latest version of the Bond Adapt Version 11 recruitment software as a service is fully browser independent as standard.

As a result, Bond customers using this version will be able to access their Bond Adapt Version 11 systems irrespective of which browser they are accessing the internet through and without time consuming and expensive customisation – a technical advance that sets Bond apart from many of its competitors, who are only able to provide access to their systems through Internet Explorer.

Daniel Richardson, Chief Technology Officer at Bond International Software, comments, “Initially, Internet Explorer held a significantly dominant market share in the browser market, leaving barely 10% of the market for any competitors. However, on account of perceived claims of faster service from alternative browsers, we have seen a dramatic variation in browser adoption, first in Asia-Pac and then across EMEA. Browser independence therefore becomes significantly more important than ever before as the methods of internet access have suddenly broadened.”

HR departments using Bond TeamSpirit are now able to design their own online forms via its employee-self-service module so that any employee-related information that an organisation may require can be collected. This is in direct contrast to many of Bond TeamSpirit’s competitors who only provide generic employee self-service online forms and can only customise them at additional developer cost.

Mobile recruitment software may be in its infancy but, as Sue Weekes at Recruiter discovers, recruiters and resourcers need to be up with developments.Despite mobile devices being a perfect fit for discreet jobseeking at any time and any place, mobile recruitment has been the subject of many a false dawn. As a report from the recent Future of Mobile Recruitment (FOMR) roundtable, co-hosted by Jobsite.co.uk and AllTheTopBananas.com neatly summed up, mobile devices and jobseeking have a synergy because of the “privacy, convenience and immediacy” offered by handsets but consumer behaviour remains ahead of the industry.

The tide is starting to turn, however, and with a major acknowledgment to the Apple iPhone ’for kick-starting things’, those who attended FOMR from major companies such as Google, Microsoft and the Internet Advertising Bureau, declared that 2010 could finally be “the year of mobile”....

Empowering the Corporate Recruitment Department

In attending the CIPD Recruitment Exhibition in Olympia last week, I was surprised to note how many visitors were focusing on the same topics of discussion.

At the event, visitors are provided with the opportunity to meet HR and Recruitment software, technology and services suppliers and discover how technology can be used to improve the HR function or how recruitment processes can be improved. But despite the variety of exhibiting organisations, there were two recurring topics of interest – a) usability and b) a growing desire for administrative self-service capability.

Usability is arguably unsurprising, as customers will always want software solutions to be visually attractive, perform well, and be intuitive in their use. Functionality must be delivered to the customer, but crucially, it must be delivered in a simple-to-use platform, which can be easily set up and managed.

But the growing trend towards administrative self-service capability is of particular interest. With new technology surrounding recruitment processes comes a wave of, and even a desire for, increased functionality.

Post recession, corporate organisations have become more progressive, proactive and ambitious in their approach to recruitment. In previous years, their recruitment departments typically performed administrative, process-based functions themselves rather than being able to devolve the activity throughout the business. This would include time-consuming tasks such as adding or advertising vacancies and managing candidates through the recruitment process. Whereas now, with the ability to reliably spread the load of the administrative management of the recruitment process, they are now exhibiting a strong desire and ability – in both skills and available time – to add more value than simply through the basics.

The facilitated capabilities for a Recruitment or HR representative to compile new Application Forms, or incorporate recent changes in either business processes or organisational structures in far less time than previously will ensure that the recruitment department can be far more productive. Typically, these services would have been provided by the software vendor, but by allowing users to perform these ‘administrative’ functions themselves, significant savings in time and cost can be realised, alongside greater performance from the recruitment department.

Providing such companies with software solutions that can not only remove the administrative burden of the usual processes, but can also accommodate and actively support strategic challenges and objectives are clearly of massive interest at present, and as a result the tools that we presented at the exhibition received very positive feedback.

The June edition of OnRec magazine, the industry publication for recruitment and Human Resources professionals working in the Internet recruitment sector, carried a feature on how to design a corporate website from a recruitment perspective, including some quotes and comments from our very own Daniel Richardson – CTO.
His view was that intuitive use, easy navigation and overall usability are essential from the recruiter and candidate point of view alike, but more importantly, the capture of data empowers the site owner to send personalised and contextual messages to candidates to improve engagement. Welcome to the first Bond International Software (UK) blog!

Over the coming weeks and months, our various spokespeople will be providing regular insights into the recruitment, HR and payroll markets – comments on industry trends, upcoming legislation, key news themes and also ways in which to maximise the use of technology in each of these business areas.

Our thoughts and comments will be set against a backdrop of some of the ideologies within Bond – the fact that many companies, agencies and corporates alike, are actively undermining their chances of attracting the right candidates by using poor, manual recruitment processes that are both time consuming and costly; the need to be able to accurately determine whether outsourcing HR, payroll – or both – fits your business, and if so, to what degree; the ways in which integrating HR, payroll and recruitment processes and software (whether all three are hosted on premise or not) can create massive advantages, both in time and cost... and plenty more besides.

In the weeks to come, we hope to be able to showcase the depth of thought leadership we possess here at Bond, and also the ways in which the issues seen primarily in HR, recruitment or payroll permeate throughout the entire business.
